Some Poodle History

Breed of dog thought to have originated in Germany. It grew so popular in France, however, that it became the national dog of that country. The poodle was developed as a water retriever, and the distinctive clipping of its heavy coat was initiated to increase the animal's efficiency in the water. The dog has been used as a performer and as a truffle hunter, whose job it was to scent and dig up the edible fungus.

An elegant-looking dog, often ranked as one of the most intelligent of all breeds, the poodle has been bred in three size varieties-- standard, miniature, and toy.

The coat consists of a woolly undercoat and a dense, wiry topcoat; if allowed to grow, the hair forms ropelike cords, and the dog is called a corded poodle. The coat should be solid of colour, white, black, brown, apricot, or silver. The standard poodle stands more than 15 inches; the miniature is 11 to 15 inches; the toy is under 11 inches.

Poodle is the name of a breed of intelligent, friendly dog. It was once used as a hunter and retriever, but is no longer classed as a sporting dog. The breed is thought to have originated in Germany during the 1500's but it may have come from France, Denmark, or Russia. Poodles are popular as pets in many countries.

Poodles may be white, black, silver, brown, or apricot. Their hair is curly or frizzy, and the coat is usually clipped in any of several styles. The three varieties of poodles are classified by shoulder height. The toy poodle is 11 inches or under; the miniature poodle is from 11 to 15 inches; and the standard poodle is over 15 inches.

Popular breed of dog probably originating in Germany but generally associated with France, where it has been raised for centuries. There are three varieties, differing in size only. The standard poodle stands over 15 in. high at the shoulder and weighs from 40 to 55 lb. The miniature stands from 10 to 15 in. high at the withers and weighs from 14 to 16 lb. The toy poodle stands up to 11 in. high at the shoulder and weighs about 6 lb. The profuse coat is dense and hard-textured and may be any solid color. If left untended, the coat will grow out in matted, ropelike cords. The poodle is clipped in a variety of styles (e.g., the puppy trim, the continental clip, and the English-saddle clip), a practice now carried out largely for show or aesthetic purposes but originally for utilitarian value. The poodle was widely used in France as a waterfowl retriever, but its heavy coat required clipping so as not to hinder the dog's progress through water. The poodle has also been raised as a circus and vaudeville performer and as a hunter of truffles. Today it is usually kept as a companion and pet.

Toy poodle:The toy poodle's history is controversial, but it is known that the toy poodle has been well known over Western Europe for more than 400 years. There are several countries that claim they should be credited with developing the breed. There are three varieties of the poodle, they are the toy, the miniature, and the standard. Toy poodles are elegant, small dogs with short, dense, curly coats. These poodles are very sensitive and very intelligent. For the most part they are happy and perky. They love people, so they make wonderful pets. The toy poodle that we know today serves mostly as a companion or a show dog. The average toy poodle weighs about 6-9 lbs. and is 11 inches tall.
